Deep Waters.
Discovery Coaching is based upon a single, fundamental belief: there is an Expert in the room when you are coaching and it is NOT the coach. The purposes of a person’s heart, says Proverbs 20:5, are deep waters, but a person of understanding can draw them out. The expertise of a coach is not in being a subject matter expert of another’s context. It is the expertise of possessing the skills of drawing out of others their greatness, their plans, their strategies, and their starting point.
Great Coaches.
A Discovery Coach draws out of others where they are, where they want to go, and how to get there. Coaching is about empowerment. People are more likely to execute on the ideas that come from within them. Every time a coach becomes an advice-giver, even if the advice is good, the coach disempowers the other person from believing that they themselves are the expert. We need great counselors, consultants, and mentors.
These valuable people help us resolve the past, help us based upon their own valuable experiences, and give us examples to follow. We also need great coaches who have the skills to bring out of us who we really are, what we really know, and how that makes us capable to do
more than we first thought.
